Background

The Ghana initiative takes as its theoretical framework the Leadership for Learning principles and framework developed through the Carpe Vitam Leadership for Learning project. In collaboration with Ghanaian partners at the University of Cape Coast, the Cambridge team has been testing the applicability of these principles in basic schools. The first cohort of 124 headteachers, participants in five weeks of residential workshops led by the 15 Professional Development Leaders (PDLs), have become front line ambassadors for their colleagues and leaders of learning within their own schools and local networks.

Endorsement and support for the programme from the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service has helped to embed leadership for learning principles in national policy and has given impetus to professional development of circuit supervisors (the advisory and quality assurance service), District Directors and the eight Regional Directors. The appointment of a national co-ordinator, Alfred Ampah-Mensah, based in Cape Coast, has been a major source of support to the the PDLs, headteachers and circuit supervisors.
