Graduate Funding
The Faculty of Education does not operate any funding schemes of its own. However, a variety of centrally administered funding opportunities exist for graduate students. It is important for potential applicants to understand that the competition for full grants is intense.
The precise nature of the funding available from each of the sources varies. Some will cover tuition fees only while others will also cover living costs. Some are applicable only to doctoral students while others include masters. Some fund only full time students while others offer pro-rata awards to part time students. Full details of all the awards available can be found on the Board of Graduate Studies’ funding webpages.
The Faculty is pleased to say that, in general, education students are successful in most of the funding competitions, and, in a typical year, will host students who have been awarded funding from all of the major funding bodies such as the UK Research Councils (ESRC and AHRC), the Gates Cambridge Trust, the Cambridge Commonwealth and Cambridge Overseas Trust, Cambridge Assessment, the Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme (CISS) and the Cambridge Home and EU Scholarship Scheme (CHESS).
The above is not an exhaustive list of funding sources to be found on the Board of Graduate Studies’ webpages; there are others which generally tend to offer relatively few scholarships and are more specific in their eligibility criteria. In addition, a number of Colleges have their own scholarships/bursaries, but these will be restricted to College members. Finally, it is important to note that deadlines for scholarships and bursaries are early, so applicants are strongly encouraged to explore funding opportunities as soon as possible - at least a year in advance of the start of the course.
