Individual Strand

This route allows students to carry out a substantial piece of supervised research on a topic of their choice leading to the submission of a thesis of 30,000 words in length. This option is only suitable for students who have already completed extensive training, or have extensive experience, in research in education or a cognate field, and who therefore would not benefit from the research training built into the other research-based masters' routes available in the faculty.  Applicants will need to satisfy themselves and us that they have already covered the material in the Educational Research course.

Students who apply for this strand will be expected to submit a preliminary research proposal of about 1,000 words demonstrating knowledge of appropriate methodology as well as providing a rationale for their research questions/focus. Students accepted for this route would, normally, be expected to have previous experience of carrying out a substantial piece of project work, or its equivalent (for example leading to publication in an academic journal), and to be familiar with a broad range of research methods at Master's level, as well as having specialist knowledge in the area of their research project. For the main areas in which supervision can be offered see information provided on our Research Development pages and on our Academic groups pages.
