Eleni Demosthenous
MPhil (Mathematics Education)
Why did you choose Cambridge?
When I started looking for master programmes in mathematics education, the description of the course offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge captured my attention. It indicated an explicit focus on international perspectives in the area of study that was adding a particular character to the course. Also, the fact that the university is a world famous institution and that world leading researchers in education were going be involved in the programme contributed in my decision to study at Cambridge. After having finished the course, I can certainly say that I have never regretted my choice.
What have you gained from the course?
Comparing my knowledge and views on mathematics education in the beginning and by the end of the course, I realise how much I have developed my understanding of mathematics education research during the year. I have learned to think more critically, rigorously and paying attention in details during the research process. Also, the writing of the essays and the thesis gave me the autonomy to engage further with topics of my interest, having at the same time guidance and support from the supervisors. I have also learned about theoretical, methodological and ethical aspects of research approaches during the research training course that was taking place simultaneously with the mathematics education sessions.
The interaction with the supervisors and the other students was valuable for developing my work, becoming aware of different perspectives and learning how to think and write academically. During the year, I faced challenges and gained new experiences. I am now certain that all contributed in the process of becoming more critical and open-minded. I have learned so much during the past year but I have also realised that there are many more to be explored out there.
What would you say to other overseas students considering coming here to study? How did you find it?
The friendly environment is helpful in overcoming the first difficulties of adjusting in a new academic and cultural context. You can easily meet other students and it is stimulating discussing with them topics of common interest. As an overseas student, you share your experiences from the educational system in your country and listen to other people’s perspectives, which I have found very enriching. Be prepared to work hard during the full terms and do your best to combine study with social activities.
