Entry Requirements

Trainees on all PGCE courses should hold an honours degree, or an overseas equivalent.  We normally look for applicants who have or expect to obtain a degree class of 2.1 or above, but will consider candidates with a 2.2 who are able to demonstrate other strengths in their application and have an otherwise strong academic background.  If you do not have or expect to obtain a degree class of 2.1, please contact the PGCE Admissions Office so that we can give you carefully considered advice.

We expect that all applicants for a PGCE course will have undertaken at least 5-10 days recent work experience or observation in a mainstream UK state school, working alongside children within the appropriate age ranges for your course choice, and be able to draw on this experience in their application.

Secondary Courses

For the secondary course, your degree should be in your chosen subject specialism or in a closely related subject. We expect that most applicants will hold three A levels at an average of grade C.

GCSE passes (Grade C or above) in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent qualifications are also required before a GTTR application can be considered.

Early Years & Primary

For the primary PGCE, we will accept applicants from any degree subject background, including psychology and childhood studies,  but if your degree is not in a National Curriculum subject we would expect you to have some National Curriculum content in your A-levels.  We expect that most applicants will hold three A-levels at grade B or above.

For admission to the primary PGCE, you must hold GCSE passes (grade C or above) in Mathematics, English Language and a mainstream Science subject before you submit your GTTR application.

We will consider applicants holding overseas qualifications that are equivalent to those described above. For an assessment of overseas qualifications contact National Academic Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (NARIC).

Please be aware that competition is strong for places on the PGCE courses and meeting our minimum entry requirements does not guarantee selection for interview.
