Course Description
This is a 60-hour 5 day course (4 days taught, one day school based) aimed at primary school teachers, teaching assistants, NNEBs and SENCOs who are interested in nurturing approaches to supporting children with SEBD. Headteachers and educational psychologists are also very welcome.
The course aims to extend participants’ understanding of children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties so that they can:
- Meet the needs of those children who lack an adequate foundation for effective learning and are consequently underachieving.
- Support staff working with such children in the mainstream classroom or PRU
- Support effectively a whole school approach to implementing the changes necessary to develop a nurturing school.
The course will comprise lectures, seminars and group discussions on issues surrounding:
Attachment theory, social learning, the nurturing school, a nurturing approach to teaching and learning, assessment tools including observation, Boxall Profile Goodman SDQ, self esteem, pro-social behaviour, small scale action research techniques, including ethical issues. The Gerda-Hankö model of Teaching support groups.
Accreditation
The course may be taken on a free-standing basis leading to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Further Professional Study (PCPS). Alternatively, if you are currently studying or wish to enrol for a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies (PDES) you may count this towards one of your units. (For full information on the requirements please contact the PPD Office.)
All participants will be expected to attend regularly (a minimum of 80%), do one day’s action research in school between the two 2 day taught modules and complete a related 4,000 word assignment to the satisfaction of the course tutors.
