Further Study and Training in Education at Cambridge
The Faculty encourages students on the Education Tripos to consider continuing their studies by way of its range of postgraduate courses in educational research or by applying to join one of its professional training courses for a career in teaching.
MPhil Courses
Part II of the Education Tripos acts as an important link to the Faculty’s range of specialist one-year full-time Master’s courses for those who seek to take their academic studies further. The research dissertation and the third year education papers provide an excellent preparation for entry into the MPhil (Education) programme, which encourages the acquisition of specialist knowledge and the engagement of professional level skills in educational research.
The MPhil courses/modules currently on offer include: Educational Research; Arts Culture and Education; Critical Approaches to Children's Literature;Educational Leadership and School Improvement; Mathematics Education; Perspectives on Inclusive and Special Education; Politics, Development and Democratic Education; Psychology and Education; Research in Second Language Education; Researching Practice; Science Teacher Researchers and Practitioners; and The Theory and Application of Counselling. These courses prepare students for the Faculty’s PhD programme.
If you would like to apply to one of these MPhil courses you will need to submit a separate application (as early as the middle of your third year) and will need to achieve at least an upper second class (2*, 2:1) degree.
PGCE Courses
For those who may be considering teaching as a career, the Education Tripos is an excellent preparation for the one-year full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Early Years and Primary or Secondary Teaching at Cambridge. The Secondary PGCE course includes subject specialisms in Art, Classics, Design and Technology, English and Drama, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Music, Science with Biology, Chemistry or Physics and Religious Studies.
These courses are considered to be outstanding and have received the highest ratings of all teacher-training courses in the country by OFSTED.
If you would like to apply to one of these PGCE courses, then you will need to submit a separate application (as early as the beginning of your third year) and will need to achieve at least an upper second class (2*, 2:1) degree.
