Biological Sciences

The biological science papers are taken from the Natural Science Tripos which is the largest undergraduate course within the university. Biology is a science which underpins much of life and provides vital insights into human areas such as child development, learning, human behaviour, health, hygiene and ecology. It is a discipline at the forefront of scientific culture linking together all living things into the dimensions of scale and time.
Studying Biological Sciences at Cambridge provides a demanding challenge. The course contains a number of options, giving students the opportunity to specialise in certain areas or to take a broad range of courses.
Preliminary Examination to Part I
In the first year you will study either Elementary Mathematics for Biologists or Mathematical Biology depending on the level of your maths. You will also study one of Biology of Cells, Evolution and Behaviour or Physiology of Organisms.
Part I
In the second year there are a number of different options. Your two or three papers can be taken from any of the subjects you did not take in the first year or you can take papers from a range of topics including Animal Biology; Ecology; Plant and Microbial Sciences.
Part II
In your final year the above papers are also offered. in addition you can take papers in Experimental Psychology and the History and Philosophy of Science. This provides a wide range of courses which allow you to follow your interests, either by specialisation or by taking up new subjects.
