History

Education at Cambridge undergraduate BA degree in education and history

History has always been an exciting and enriching subject to study. In recent decades the range of historical enquiry has become wider than ever. Historians have not only refined our understanding of processes of political and economic change but have also engaged in cross-disciplinary research with sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers and scientists to deepen our comprehension of past societies, cultures and thought-patterns. Opportunities exist for you to take papers that use these wide ranging approaches as well as choose from the wide chronological and geographical span on offer.

All History papers are taught by the Faculty of History.

Preliminary Examination to Part I

In the first year (Prelim to Part I), you will study Historical Arguments and Practices and one other paper from a range of topics and eras including British Political and Constitutional History, British Economic and Social History, European History and World History.

Part I

In your second year , you can study up to three papers. These cover different periods in British History from AD 380 to the present day; European History spanning the period 776 BC to the present day; The History of Political Thought; as well as American or World History. You can also choose to take History and Scope of Archaeology.

Part II

If you choose to study History in your final year, you can a maximum of two papers from the Historical Tripos which offer a similar range subject areas to those offered at Part I.
