How is the course structured?

The Education Tripos involves three years of full-time study leading to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Like all Cambridge degrees, the Education Tripos is divided into two parts, in this case with a two-year Part I and a one-year Part II. Exams occur at the end of each year, with a preliminary exam to Part I at the end of the first year, Part I exams at the end of the second, and Part II exams at the end of the third. Both parts share a common organizational pattern, combining choices from education and your specialist subject in a variety of patterns.

In the first year of the course, students study two papers in education and two from their subject specialism, making four in all.

In the second year there are a total of five papers, comprising two papers in education and two from the subject specialism, with a fifth chosen either from education or from the subject specialism.

In the third year students take five papers, comprising a minimum of three education papers and two further papers selected either from education or borrowed from the subject specialism. The flexible structure of the course at this point allows students, if they wish, to take all their five papers from education. As one of their Part II education papers, all students prepare a 10,000-word Research and Investigation (R&I) dissertation project having either an empirical or a conceptual focus.

After completing the Education Tripos, you could continue your studies in Education at Cambridge by taking one of our full-time Master’s courses or by completing a teaching certificate through our PGCE programme.
