CFCEW May 2007 One-Day Workshop

Depression and Self-harm

DATE: Saturday 12 May 2007 (10.00 am - 12.30 pm)

VENUE: Faculty of Education, 184 Hills Road, Cambridge

SPEAKER: Raphael Kelvin

This session covered issues regarding the identification of depression in young people, principally secondary school aged children, but touched on younger children. It included intervention in primary care settings and when to refer to specialist services. Self harm was explored with particular reference to depression and the issues of confidentiality and consent that so often occur in working with self harming/depressed adolescents.

Raphael Kelvin:

I am a consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Cambs and Peterborough Mental Health Trust, based in Cambridge in the outpatients department at Brookside Clinic, where I provide specialist tier 3 services for our locality. I have a special interest and experience in emotional disorders in young people and depression/self harm in particular. I have had the training and experience in multiple therapeutic modalities, including family therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and behavioural therapies, but in particular psychodynamic therapy. As a child psychiatrist I have particular expertise in psychopharmacology and management of complexity, both in patients and in our organisations. I have responsibility for the organisation of the regional child psychiatry training of specialist registrars. I have an interest in service organisation and service delivery models and significant on going interest in research. e are currently completing a project comparing treatment as usual with CBT for adolescent depression in specialist services. In a previous time I trained as a GP and retain a focus on the whole child and the importance of good consultation skills and good clinical interactions as the basis of all that we do.

The fee for this event, which included coffee, was £20 for Cambridge Forum members, £30 for non-members.
