MEd Entrance Requirements

Prior study and experience

Graduate work in Cambridge is intense and very intellectually demanding and so the University has high academic entry requirements. You are normally expected to hold or to be about to achieve:

  • a 2(i) honours degree from a UK university or equivalent professional qualification and experience i.e. Advanced Diploma in Education
  • an equivalent standard from an overseas university
  • a fluent command of the English Language
  • completion of any current training or education course

Applications are welcomed from newly qualified teachers who have a strong academic background and active support from the senior management of their school. Recent involvement in professional development activities is an advantage.

Candidates not possessing the specified academic qualifications but able to make a strong personal case based on professional experience, and those from allied professions, may be considered for exceptional entry.

Competence in English

If your first language is not English you should take a language proficiency test to show you have the necessary command of the language to get the most out of your course. You do not need to take the test before you apply, but, if you are made an offer and have not already met our English language requirements, one of the conditions of admission will be that you pass a test at the correct level. You must achieve the minimum requirements no more than two years before the start of your course.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System: www.ielts.org/) is the University's preferred test. Details can be obtained from local British Council Offices.

Minimum requirement: an overall band score of 7.0 with not less than 7.0 in speaking, listening and writing, and 6.5 in reading.
