Masters Programme

The Faculty offers two routes to a Master's degree; the full time MPhil and the part time MEd. In this way current educational practitioners and educational researchers are able to study alongside and learn from each other. The content of the programme is the same for both groups of students and allows graduates (or graduate equivalents) to study education at an advanced level.

Most students follow one of the specialist strands which incorporate a common core research training course. This means that all Masters graduates gain a secure knowledge of educational research techniques, at both theoretical and practical levels, which they then apply within their particular specialist area.

On all routes except the individual route students are required to complete two assignments of between 6,000 - 6,500 words and a thesis of up to 20,000 words in order to receive their Masters

Students who complete a Masters in the Faculty of Education will gain:

  • An advanced knowledge and understanding of practices, processes, and outcomes of teaching and learning;
  • The capacity to analyse educational issues and practices using systematic and research led approaches;
  • A critical understanding of and some experience of, applying commonly used research methods and the capacity to judge their appropriateness for educational enquiry;
  • The ability to read educational research critically;
  • The practical, organizational and presentational skills necessary for the successful reporting of educational research;
  • Access to outstanding research facilities;
  • The opportunity to work closely with specialists in their field;
  • A supportive, stimulating environment with excellent supervision;
  • A strong community of like-minded students who will provide mutual support.
