MEd Entrance Requirements

Prior study and experience

Graduate work in Cambridge is intense and very intellectually demanding and so the University has high academic entry requirements. You are normally expected to hold or to be about to achieve:

  • a 2(i) honours degree from a UK university or equivalent professional qualification and experience i.e. Advanced Diploma in Education
  • an equivalent standard from an overseas university
  • a fluent command of the English Language
  • completion of any current training or education course

Applications are welcomed from newly qualified teachers who have a strong academic background and active support from the senior management of their school. Recent involvement in professional development activities is an advantage.

Candidates not possessing the specified academic qualifications but able to make a strong personal case based on professional experience, and those from allied professions, may be considered for exceptional entry.

Research proposal

Depending on which course you have applied to, the Faculty may contact you and ask you to submit a 1,500 word research proposal addressing the following issues:

  • The topic that you propose to research
This should consist of a clear outline of the research question or questions and an analytical justification of the choice of topic on academic and educational grounds.
  • The contribution that your work will make to the field
This section should show evidence of some prior knowledge of the literature in the chosen field, and should relate the proposed research questions and objectives to a critical appraisal of gaps or issues raised in existing research.
  • The grounding provided by your previous study and experience
Applicants should comment on previous experience, e.g. Master's study and/or professional work, and show how this experience has informed their interest in the proposed field of study.

It is likely that in most cases the research questions and methodology will be refined and adapted during the course of the year in consultation with the supervisor. Nevertheless, the quality of this initial presentation is a very important factor in deciding whether to offer a place to an applicant.

Attendance

The Faculty has an 80% attendance requirement for the MEd programme. Attendance is one afternoon (depending on the route chosen) from 2.00-7.00 during University term times (including school half-terms).
