Profile

Kristine Black-Hawkins taught in schools and worked for local government before joining the Open University and then later the Faculty of Education. Her current teaching and research interests are in the area of inclusive and special education and, in particular, school cultures and how they might be developed in ways that raise the achievements of all learners whilst safeguarding the inclusion of those who are more vulnerable to processes of exclusion. She is currently researching the concept of inclusive pedagogy and teachers' craft knowledge of their inclusive classroom practices. An important aspect of this is the generation of innovative research approaches and tools to support the work.

She was a member of the research team that produced The Index for Inclusion (funded by the DfES to be distributed to all schools in England and Wales and subsequently translated for use in over twenty countries, including Brazil, Canada, India, Norway, Portugal, Rumania and South Africa). As part of this project she worked with educationalists and NGOs to produce support materials for use in different national settings (funded by UNESCO). Kristine has also been a member of the SUPER (Schools-University Partnership in Educational Research) project, based at the Faculty. This aims to develop ways in which members of schools and the university can work together as research partners. She continues to support this work as the project’s critical friend. She is on the editorial board of the Cambridge Journal of Education, and regularly reviews for journals, conferences, publishers and research bodies.
