Profile

Kristine Black-Hawkins teaches in the area of inclusive and special education. Her research interests are in school cultures and what helps to change them, particularly in relationship to developing more inclusive policies and practices. She is currently researching the nature of schools which are able to raise the achievements of all children, whilst safeguarding the inclusion of those few who are more vulnerable to processes of exclusion, and especially those whose behaviour is troubled or troublesome. An important focus of this work is the development of guidance and materials to support practitioners to research their own classes and schools.

From 1997-2000, she was a member of the research team that produced The Index for Inclusion, funded by the DfES to be distributed to all schools in England and Wales. The Index has subsequently been translated for use in over twenty countries, including Brazil, Canada, India, Norway, Portugal, Rumania and South Africa. As part of this development, she has worked with educationalists and NGOs in India to produce support materials for countries of the south (funded by UNESCO).

She has also been a member of the SUPER (Schools-University Partnership in Educational Research) project, based at the Faculty. This aims to develop ways in which members of schools and the university can work together as research partners. In 2004, the project team was commissioned by the NCSL to undertake a national project on networks of teachers researching their own practices.

She has taught in secondary schools and worked for local government, developing special education policy and provision.
