Peter Cunningham research interests are in the historical and contemporary development of educational policy and practice, with a particular focus on the primary school curriculum and the training and professional identity of primary school teachers. He has researched and written on educational innovators and progressives, and is a contributor on educationists to the New Dictionary of National Biography. He has been active nationally and internationally in organisations for the study of educational history and is a member of the editorial boards of the journals History of Education, Journal of Educational Administration and History, and the Cambridge Journal of Education.
