John taught music in secondary schools in Southall, Worcester and Basingstoke before higher degree study at Reading University and joining the Music Department of Homerton College in 1992 to lead the secondary postgraduate course in music within the Cambridge Partnership. He is interested in the improvement of the quality of learning and teaching in music, assessment, music education and citizenship, and the analysis of current practice in relation to public policy.
