Profile

Former Dean of Education and Continuing Education at the University of Leicester, joined Homerton College in 1999 as Associate Director of Research.

Is best known for his research into primary classroom practice which began as co-Director of the ORACLE (Observation and Classroom Learning Evaluation) project on teaching and learning in the primary classroom (1975-80).

Since then he has directed the following projects all funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC):

Group Work in the Primary Classroom (1980-83)
Primary Teachers' Assessments in the Arts (1985-88)
Implementing the National Curriculum in Small Schools (1991-94))
Replicating the ORACLE study (1995-98))
Grouping and Group work (2000-2004)

Also funded by the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE): Curriculum Provision in the Small Rural Primary School (1982-85) and the Impact on Pupil Progress of Transfer and Transition (1989- ). He was consultant to the Council of Europe (1982-87), National Curriculum Council (1989) Hong Kong Council for National Academic Awards (1992) and the National Council for Educational Technology (NCET) (1995-98).
