Profile

A qualified Speech and Language Therapist for many years, Carol has worked in schools, community clinics, special needs centres and primary language units with adults and children.

She is now working on a 4-year research project looking at literacy in deaf children.

Research Topics

The reading development of deaf children with and without a cochlear implant.

Current Research Projects

Phonological Skills, Vocabulary Development and Reading Development in Deaf Children with Cochlear Implants.

This longitudinal study examines the development of phonological awareness skills in deaf children who have received a cochlear implant (CI). We are following the reading development of two groups of implanted deaf children, early implanted (before 39 months) and later implanted (after 43 months), and also a hearing aided group and hearing controls.

The basic research question being addressed by this project is whether access to a greater range of speech frequencies provided by cochlear implantation might have a positive effect on the phonological representations developed by deaf children, and whether this will in turn affect reading development.

We assess language and reading skills. Participants also carry out computerised tasks using pictures to assess their phonological awareness of syllable, rhyme and phoneme.
