Why did you decide to become a teacher and why did you choose Cambridge to do your PGCE?

'I have a medical background and have always enjoyed contact with children through my work. I decided to leave the medical profession in order to pursue this interest. I chose Cambridge because it is one of the best places in the UK in which to train and has many opportunities for further research.'

Have you changed career in order to do your teacher training?

'Previous to the PCGE I was a Junior-doctor and left the profession in order to teach (something I find far more satisfying). I feel that if you're going to spend seventy-hours a week working it's far more important to do something you enjoy regardless of how much you earn. '

Any brief comments about the PGCE so far?

'Excellent opportunities for self-directed learning (due to the high academic profiles of the lecturers).'

What message would you like to give to members of different communities as regards to the profession of teaching?

'There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't go for teaching. Helping children to learn is one of the most satisfying things you can do and any differing experience you have because of your background will enrich that.'
