Physics/Science

All students of the sciences study a jointly taught course of which covers areas of concern common to the teaching of all the sciences such as laboratory safety, new developments in science courses and the implementation of science education research in the classroom. This course is central to the planning of the specialist courses.
The physics course aims to introduce students to the exciting world of physics teaching throughout the 11-18 age range. The course aims to show current developments in school physics teaching both as it is today and how it might be in the early years of a teacher's career. The teaching is firmly based in the laboratory and the development of practical and ICT skills are given a high priority. How pupils learn physics and develop an understanding of physics in its wider context both within and outside school are high priorities of the course. See our recent Challenging Science Conference involving 14 year old students from local comprehensives.
There is a very active Physics Centre aimed at teachers and students in the East Anglian region, many of whom are mentors for professional school placement. Students are also encouraged to take part in professional meetings of both the Institute of Physics and the Association for Science Education. See also our Physics Teacher Profile.
In addition all science students take a combined science course aimed at providing some background to the teaching of all the sciences at Key Stage 3.
Applicants with backgrounds in physics, engineering, materials science, astronomy, geophysics and other cognate subjects are welcome to apply.
Inspected by OFSTED in 2004/05, all the science courses in the Faculty achieved the top grades in every category.
