CFCEW February 2010 One-Day Workshop

Getting and giving the supervision you need

DATE: Saturday 6 February 2010 (10.00 am - 12.30 pm)

VENUE: Faculty of Education, Donald McIntyre Building, 184 Hills Road, Cambridge

SPEAKER: Penny Henderson

Satisfying and useful supervision depends on both supervisor and supervisee(s) feeling entitled to enjoy the work, and responsible for co-creating a good relationship and useful outcome.

This entails identifying what you want and need as a supervisee, and negotiating for it. As supervisor you can usefully be clear about what you offer, and which particular theoretical approaches and contextual knowledge inform your approach.

This session is offered for supervisees and supervisors to explore their expectations of supervision and ways to approach the start of a new supervisory relationship to maximise safety, professional development and enjoyment. Penny aims to provide an introduction to aspects of the responsibilities, ethics, skills and processes related to supervision, through experiential work, some information and discussion.

Penny Henderson is a BACP accredited counsellor and accredited supervisor and Fellow. Although claiming to be semi-retired after 16 years as a supervisor, she has two books on supervision in press with Karnac in 2009: "A Different Wisdom: Reflections on supervision practice", and an edited book on "Supervision Training: Issues and Approaches". She has been involved in Higher Education for most of her working life, first supervising Cambridge undergraduates in politics and sociology, then through 20 years tutoring in the Open University, and latterly in the Department of Anatomy and at Addenbrooks teaching communication and professional development to medical students. She was a training officer for Cambridge Social Services in the 1980s, and has had an independent counselling, supervision and organisational consultancy and training practice since 1981. She co-directs Cambridge Supervision Training.

The fee for this event, which includes coffee, is £20 for Cambridge Forum members, £30 for non-members. Please include your cheque with your application - cheques made payable to "University of Cambridge" and crossed a/c payee.
