This course takes place from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Thursday and 9.00 am to 4.00 pm on Friday.
The Foundation Course aims to make psychodynamic ideas accessible and highly practical for ALL professionals who work with children, young people and their parents in a wide range of settings. These include social workers, teachers, psychologists, health visitors, kindergarten and child care workers, doctors and community workers. A key concept is that the child's behaviour has meaning and is always a communication. The Foundation Course is devised and run by Ruth Schmidt Neven a Tavistock trained child psyhchotherapist who has worked for over twenty years in the NHS and who has been a pioneer in parent education in the UK. Now based in Melbourne, Ruth was previously inaugural Chief Psychotherapist at the Royal Children's Hospital and is currently Director of the Centre for Child and Family Development in Melbourne. Ruth runs training programmes throughout Australia and overseas. Her forthcoming book 'Core Principles of Assessment and Therapeutic Communication with Children Parents and Families: Towards the promotion of child and family wellbeing' will be available from Routledge in 2010. Ruth's previous book 'Emotional Milestones: Development from birth to adulthood' has been described as making a major contribution to child health.
