Accredited Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling Training Course

counselling training

Introduction

The Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling Training at the Faculty of Education is accredited by both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the United Kingdom Association for Psychotherapeutic Counsellors. The course specialises in the aims, processes and skills of working with children and young people thus there is an emphasis on working through play and with the arts. Other significant strands of the training include child and adolescent development, clinical skills, professional issues, ethics and child protection, child mental health, developing children's emotional well-being, multi agency work, working in a school setting, working with families and working with groups. This training enables participants to become effective and ethical psychotherapeutic counsellors.

Core Elements

The core theoretical model of the training is integrative and relational. This means that the course brings together elements from different theories to make a coherent whole. There is an emphasis, on this training, on the uniqueness of the individual and the importance of the therapeutic relationship, particularly intersubjectivity. The view that we hold is that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is paramount for successful therapy. The key theoretical perspectives that comprise our approach are psychodynamic, humanistic and increasingly neuro-scientific. These major perspectives each contribute a core aspect to our understanding of working therapeutically with youngsters. These aspects are

  • internal psychological processes and the transference;
  • taking a holistic view of the child;
  • attachment and affect regulation

In particular the work of Rogers, Kohut, Freud, Winnicott, Bowlby, Clarkson, Schore and Perls feature prominently in the course.
