This new 60-hour course is intended to counter a popular and professional culture that increasingly pathologies children and young people. A key intention is to introduce positive psychological frameworks that promote growth and development and the importance of quality of relationships in the learning environment.

The course is intended to lead participants beyond the familiar territory of behaviour management theory and into alternative perspectives that emphasise the relational dimension of teaching and learning. It is intended as an innovative departure from orthodox approaches to responding to pupil behaviour.

The anticipated audience will be teachers and other professional groups supporting and leading in schools in pastoral care and is open to all those working with children and young people in school settings.

The aims of the course are:

  • to provide participants opportunities to learn, reflect and plan school-based interventions to improve the quality of learning relationships;
  • to provide participants with an introduction to Transactional Analysis in addition to other non-behavioural perspectives;
  • to encourage participants in creating an innovative vision for their work with students, colleagues, parents/carers.

The course is led by Giles Barrow who is a transactional analyst, a qualified teacher, an experienced consultant and also an author in this field.

Accreditation: The course may be taken on a free-standing basis leading to the award of a Certificate of Further Professional Study (CFPS). Alternatively, if you are currently studying or wish to enrol for an Advanced Diploma in Educational Studies (ADES) you may count this as one of your units. (For full information on the requirements please contact the PPD Office). Course participants will also receive the Introductory Certificate in Transactional Analysis.

All participants will be expected to attend regularly (a minimum of 80%) and to complete a related assignment to the satisfaction of the course tutor. Participants will attend 35 hours of workshop and lecture sessions at the Faculty 4-7 and undertake a research project in their own schools setting (20 hours) and have individual supervision of 2 hours and group supervision of 10 hours.
