Advising and Consulting on the Careers Work Curriculum

A 30 hour Certificate of Further Professional Study Course for personal advisers, advisory teachers and project workers, in Connexions and Local Authorities, with a designated responsibility for supporting schools and teachers with planning and developing the curriculum for CEG. The course provides an overview of the curriculum and current developments in 11-19 education and training. It then focuses specifically on careers education within the wider context of IAG, and on the knowledge and skills needed to work in partnership with schools to help plan their programmes of IAG and careers education.

Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 October, Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 December 2008 (9.30 am - 4.15 pm)
Friday 20 March 2009 (9.30 am - 3.15 pm)

Aims of the programme

  1. To prepare participants for the role of being consultants to schools and colleges on the curriculum.
  2. To enable participants to gain knowledge and understanding of the curriculum 11-19.
  3. To enable participants to gain knowledge and understanding of the processes of curriculum planning and curriculum development.
  4. To examine the participants' role in supporting schools/colleges and teachers/tutors with curriculum development and in-service training.
  5. To increase participants' skills and confidence to work as consultants and trainers.

Content:

  • the 11-19 curriculum (key stage 3, key stage 4, post-16) - an overview and component parts
  • the place of careers education, and related areas such as PSHE and work-related learning, in the curriculum
  • the roles of the local authority, Connexions and the external provider of IAG in the curriculum
  • curriculum planning and curriculum development
  • the relationships between the curriculum and other aspects of careers work (e.g. guidance, work experience, careers information)
  • working as a consultant to schools and colleges
  • negotiating skills (with curriculum co-ordinators and senior managers)
  • planning and providing in-service training
  • key issues for schools and their senior leaders
  • working with other agencies
  • supporting guidance and other materials

The course will involve 25 hours contact time, in course sessions organised over 5 days, with 5 hours spent on independent study. Participants will experience a range of approaches: formal lectures; structured group work; individual work. In addition participants will be expected to undertake a set task (to plan, provide and evaluate either a consultancy visit to a school or college, or an INSET session) and to write an account of the work, reflecting on what they have learned from the experience.

Accreditation: Participants must be willing to:

  • attend a minimum of 80% of sessions
  • participate in course-related activities
  • undertake course-related tasks
  • complete the course assignment of 2000 words

Participants will be expected either to undertake a consultancy visit to a school, or to plan and deliver an INSET session. They will be expected to present a written account of the activity, from planning through to evaluation, with reflections on what they have learned from the experience. The written assignment should comprise 2,000 words.

Tuition fee: £410 (which excludes the cost of refreshments)
