Attendance: Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 October, Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 November 2008 (9.30 am - 4.00 pm)

Venue: Faculty of Education, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 8PQ

Lead Tutors: Ray Arnold and Eve Boyd

This is a follow up 30-hour course for those who have attended an "Understanding the theory and practice of nurture groups" course. It is intended to extend both the theoretical base and the practical implications of nurture groups. The focus would remain primary, with an emphasis on early intervention. It is particularly aimed at class, nurture group and behaviour support teachers and learning support assistants who are supporting young children with social, educational and behavioural difficulties (SEBD). It would also be relevant to headteachers, educational psychologists and SENCOs. Those who have attended a nurture group course at Cambridge or any Nurture Group Network accredited course elsewhere should find it particularly relevant.

The course aims to extend participants' understanding of children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties so that they can:

  • reduce children's barriers to learning
  • develop the links between mental health, social and emotional well-being and educational progress
  • understand play therapy as an approach to supporting pupils
  • develop links between theory and practice through action research
  • use the theoretical and conceptual literature which links students' action researach with the six nurture group principles.

Accreditation: The course may be taken on a free-standing basis leading to the award of a Certificate of Further Professional Study (CFPS). Alternatively, if you are currently studying or wish to enrol for an Advanced Diploma in Educational Studies (ADES) you may count this to one of your units. (For full information on the requirements please contact the PPD Office.)

All participants will be expected to attend regularly (a minimum of 80%) and to complete a related assignment to the satisfaction of the course tutor.
