Faculty of Education: Car Parking Policy
POLICY G001
Policy Date: July 2010
Staff Parking
Staff parking is limited and staff are encouraged to consider alternative modes of transport. Parking permits are allocated on an annual basis according to agreed criteria. To apply for a permit outside the annual cycle (Jan-Dec) please get a permit application form from reception. Forms must be completed and returned to the Facilities & Services Manager for authorisation and issue of a parking permit. Please also be aware that a permit does not guarantee a space. Staff will need to re-apply in December each year. There are four car parks for staff use, and spaces will be allocated according to which building colleagues are based in. They are located as follows:
- Donald McIntyre Building – accessed from Harrison Drive, by means of suitably activated University Card, or by speaking into intercom.
- Mary Allan Building – accessed through the main entrance into Homerton College on Hills Road, by means of a Faculty Security card.
- Harrison Drive (behind the Science Education Centre) – accessed from Harrison Drive by means of a suitably programmed Faculty Security card.
- Trumpington House – accessed from Hills Road by means of a suitably activated University Card.
Criteria for allocation of staff parking permits
There are certain criteria that will influence whether or not staff are issued with a parking permit. They are as follows:
- whether someone has a registered disability;
- people with other medical or physical conditions which necessitate that they should park in close proximity to their place of work;
- family commitments – a need to attend to dependent family members during the day (e.g. taking/ collecting children to/from nursery or school or visiting elderly or hospitalised family members) in areas not immediately accessible by public transport;
- unsocial hours of work – a requirement to work unsocial hours on a regular and frequent basis finishing and/or starting at a time when a viable alternative is not provided by public transport;
- persons having a requirement to use a car for work purposes on a regular basis during the working day as an essential part of their duties;
- inadequate public transport – applicable to staff who reside beyond a distance where they could reasonably be expected to walk or cycle to work, in areas beyond reasonable reach of public transport*. (Staff applying on this basis would need to note why they need to drive into Cambridge rather than use the Park and Ride);
- staff who are willing and able to park their vehicle at the University secure park and cycle facility and cycle, walk or take the University shuttle bus service to their place of work.
*Reasonable public transport is defined as a total journey time not in excess of forty-five minutes each way including walking time.
Former members of staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students are not eligible to apply.
Visitor parking
We have 30 parking permits available on any one day to enable visitors to the Faculty to park in the area alongside the Mary Allan Building. It will be clear from the permit sent out which car park the visitor should use.
Unfortunately, however, having a permit will not necessarily guarantee a parking space. Visitor parking permits for individual visitors, meetings or conferences must be requested from reception sufficiently well in advance to allow time for a permit to be issued. Permits must be displayed in the car windscreen. In order to enter or exit the MAB car park, visitors should buzz at the barrier to connect to the Faculty receptionist who will raise the barrier.
To apply for a visitor permit, please use the following link: https://carparking.educ.cam.ac.uk/.
Disabled parking bays are situated close to each of the Faculty's buildings. There are five outside the Donald McIntyre Building and one outside both Trumpington House and the Mary Allan Building. Anyone requiring a permit to use one of these bays should ensure they indicate their need on the booking form. If you experience any problems please either email reception@educ.cam.ac.uk or tel: 01223 767600.
Student parking
The Faculty is unable to make parking available to students. In exceptional circumstances a one-off allocation of a visitor space may be permitted.
Disabled parking
There are five disabled parking spaces in the Donald McIntyre Building car park, one in the MAB car park, and one outside Trumpington House.
