Faculty of Education: Recycling and Reuse
POLICY G006
Policy Date: February 2010
General Recycling
A summary of what we currently do:
- Fluorescent tubes are recycled through the University’s Environmental Officer.
- Likewise, computing equipment, printers and laptop batteries are recycled through the Environmental Office; they are collected by Paul Rogers in LTS, who can provide further information.
- Other batteries are also recycled via LTS; please give them to Paul.
- Printer and toner cartridges are returned to manufacturers for recycling. These should be returned to LTS.
- Garden waste is all put into a compound which we had built near the gates of Trumpington House.
- Cardboard is recycled through Anglia Recycling, across the site. Please leave any boxes near your waste bins and they will be recycled; you can take smaller items down to the bins outside DMB and MAB.
- Glass bottles which would normally be wine bottles from the café are disposed of by the University Centre.
- Plastic bottle lids are recycled too; leave these in the container near the sink in the DMB Staff Social Area. The large plastic milk containers should be rinsed when empty and placed in the special recycling bin in the DMB Staff Social Area. Other plastic bottles can go in here too.
- Aluminium cans are recycled – there is a box in the cafeteria for these and one in the DMB Social Area – PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY ARE EMPTY AND CRUSHED!
- Plastic water cups: currently the kind supplied by Aquaid cannot be recycled in the UK so we have purchased a supply of robust, colourful polycarbonate cups for all staff and PhD students to keep in their working areas. Only other students and casual visitors should need to use the disposable water cooler cups.
- You can take your cup to meetings/teaching sessions/lunch in the cafe or elsewhere, refilling/washing it as needed. Please look after your own cup and take it back to your desk after use so as not to create unnecessary work for cleaning or kitchen staff.
- There is a supply of cups in the staff social area in DMB too for use by visitors or anyone located in another building who is teaching, meeting or lunching in DMB. Please return these ones to the coffee cup trolley and they will be dishwashed.
Paper Recycling and Reuse
Anglia paper recycling bins are located near public access photocopiers and printers in all buildings. Staples need not be removed. These bins are not just for waste paper from copying or printing; please collect up all suitable waste paper in your offices (you could use an empty copier paper
box or lid to hold it; there are labelled spares available in the staff social area in DMB) and then dump it in the bins. If everyone does this we can save thousands of trees!
The bin labels show that they can take high grade office paper of any colour, including:
Letterheads, laser and photocopier paper, white envelopes without windows, continuation sheets, compliment slips, invoices, delivery notes, computer paper, University network telephone directories, brochures (not laminated)
None of the following should be placed in the bins please:
Newspaper, magazines, cardboard, brown or window envelopes, glossy or laminated papers, photocopier paper wrappers, acetate sheets, public telephone directories or yellow pages
It is even more energy-efficient to save and re-use paper where possible, for example:
- please hang on to envelopes in decent condition and re-use them for all internal mail (external mail too where appropriate)
- waste paper from printers and photocopiers is great for making notes on or even printing draft documents, e-mails etc. on the other side
- THINK before you print that e-mail – is it really necessary?!
- photocopying or printing double-sided obviously halves the volume of paper you use – let’s make this the default option where possible
