Cognitive approaches to literature is a relatively new field which draws on areas including psychology, neurology, and literary criticism. Over the past decade it has become an exciting and growing presence in children’s literary studies, explored in many articles, conference talks, and monographs.

To reflect the interdisciplinary nature of cognitive studies, this symposium will feature not only children's literature scholars but also speakers whose research across a variety of areas informs the field. We look forward to papers on topics as diverse as script and schema theory in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, developing reciprocity through digital personalised books, and the use of children’s fiction in EmpathyLab’s programme for primary schools.
