Profile

I was an undergraduate at the the University of Cambridge and then completed a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics before becoming a mathematics teacher and then Head of the Mathematics Department at a secondary school in Cambridgeshire.

I have worked at the University for the last 27 years, first training secondary mathematics teachers at the Faculty of Education, and now as a member of the Millennium Mathematics Project working for the NRICH Project, where I have focussed on problem solving and on creating opportunities for students to learn mathematics through exploration and discussion.

I am responsible for developing resources for secondary students that aim to enrich their experience of mathematics and challenge them to think mathematically.

I also develop "rich tasks” and resources for secondary teachers that are linked to the secondary school curriculum.

To support teachers I have published a collection of articles on rich mathematical tasks and how they can be used in the classroom.

I continue to work in secondary schools with students and mathematics teachers.

I have run Professional Development courses for teachers in the UK and abroad (India, UAE, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa, Oman, Jordan, Egypt, Spain, Colombia, Chile, Argentina).

I have supported and contributed to the work of various organisations, including the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, The Royal Institution, Cambridge Assessment, UKMT, Cambridge International Examinations, The Prince's Teaching Institute, HeyMath!, The Association of Teachers of Mathematics and The Mathematical Association.
