Gatsby Technical Education Projects:
Supporting Opportunities for New Teachers' Professional Growth

The Context

Retention of newly qualified science and design and technology teachers is a serious problem. Over fifty percent of newly trained teachers either do not go into teaching or leave teaching within the first three years of taking up an appointment. Recent research undertaken by the London Institute of Education suggests that extra support in the early years of teaching and time away from the classroom can improve teacher commitment, motivation and retention rates.

The Approach

The Gatsby Charitable foundation funds and manages a range of projects designed to enrich and enhance learning and teaching through subject support for initial teacher training courses and professional development for teachers in science, mathematics and technology. The Faculty of Education administers the funding and selection of GTEP projects at the University of Cambridge.
