Suseela Malakolunthu

Dr. Suseela Malakolunthu is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, University of Malaya. She obtained her Ph.D. in 1999 from the Michigan State University, USA in the area of Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy. From 2005-2006, under the Fulbright Senior Fellow Program, she conducted her research on ‘Multicultural education and leadership’ at Stanford University, California. In 2009 she was appointed as a “Research Fellow” at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

Suseela is currently spending nine months as a visiting scholar at the Centre for Commonwealth Education in Cambridge.  At present she is collaborating primarily with John MacBeath and Sue Swaffield on their project with the University of Cape Coast which aims to build leadership capacity in Ghanaian basic schools.

Since 1997 Suseela has been involved in a number of research projects and presented in several international conferences that include the American Educational Research Association (AERA), European Educational Research Association (EERA), Asia-Pacific Education Research Association (APERA) and Comparative International Educational Society (CIES). She has also been invited to deliver key note/plenary address in several international seminars and conferences.

Suseela has also published papers in journals, contributed chapters in books, and monographs. She has published two books: ‘Teacher learning in Malaysia: Problems and possibilities of reform’ (2007) and ‘Fulbright chronicles: American experience, Malaysian perspective’ (2010) both by the University of Malaya Press. She also serves as the editor of the international Journal of Educational Administration and Policy Studies (JEAPS) and reviews papers for several international journals.

Suseela too has served as an education consultant cum trainer for school improvements projects in Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka. From time to time, she is also invited by the National Association of the School Principals/Head teachers and both private and public schools to conduct courses/workshops and provide consulting services on school improvement and organizational development in Malaysia.

Suseela is a member of the ‘Community of Practice’ of the International Bureau of Education (IBE), Geneva. And she also serves in the Executive Committee of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Malaysia (FAAM) and plays an active role in international exchange of scholars and youth participation in community development.
