தமிழ் (Tamil)

தமிழ் (Tamil) is one of the oldest surviving independent classical languages still spoken by more than 90 million people around the world, with it’s written form dating back to 600 BC - 400 BC in Tamil Brahmi or Tamili (தமிழீ) to modern Vatteluthu (வட்டெழுத்து) script. The unique work done in poetry, literature, governance, music, drama, science and the deep philosophical meaning of the work of classical Tamil literature has led the scholars to describe Tamil as "one of the great classical traditions and literatures of the world". Tamil literature has stone inscriptions and written documents recorded for more than 2300 years. Tamil has its own comprehensive written grammar book the Tolkāppiyam (தொல்காப்பியம்) dating back to 2nd century BC. Among Indian languages, Tamil has the highest number of ancient stone inscriptions and non-Sanskritic Indian literature.

Tamil is the official language of the Indian state of Tamilnadu (தமிழ்நாடு) , union territory of Puducherry, Srilanka and Singapore and has significant numbers of speakers in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji and South Africa. Tamil is widely spoken and enriched by literary work by the natives and diaspora around the world including UK Tamils.

Tamil people are very passionate about their language and have continuously developed it since the Neolithic period (Proto-Dravidian language). As a continuation, the Tamil diaspora of the world along with Tamil speaking countries have created a syllabus for teaching the language abroad with ease. This ensures that language of Tamil is passed to the future generations.

Cambridge Tamil School (கேம்பிரிட்ச் தமிழ்ப் பள்ளி) is a voluntary organisation which offers services predominantly in teaching, engaging in cultural activities, translations and continue to preserve the classical civilization and language, which believes in “யாதும் ஊரே, யாவரும் கேளீர்” (“The universe belongs to everyone, who are our kith and kin” - from a 2000 year old Tamil Poem).
