Profile

I lecture and supervise on a number of post-graduate programmes. My core research has focused on classroom teaching and learning – in particular on pupil engagement, pupil consultation and pupil ‘voice’. In my previous career as a secondary school English teacher, I was always interested in consulting my pupils about teaching and learning. Studying for an MPhil and then PhD (ESRC funded) gave me the opportunity to explore this further. Data from my research is featured by Jean Rudduck and Donald McIntyre in Improving Learning through Consulting Pupils (2007, London: Routledge). My article 'Consulting pupils: practice, policy and response in one school' in Research Papers in Education gives an account of my doctoral study. From June 2011-2015, I supported Professor Alison Cook-Sather (former Visiting Jean Rudduck Scholar, Homerton College) with the organisation of our annual Cambridge Student Voice Seminars which provided a space for people from all over the world interested in student voice to meet, share their work and plan future collaborations. The blog I created to support the seminars is still available to consult (archive of the seminars) and occasionally updated with news and publications by seminar participants (link above and also below this profile).

I was appointed as PhD external examiner by the University of Newcastle in 2014 and the University of Aberdeen in 2017. I was External Examiner for the School of Education, Communication & Language Sciences, University of Newcastle for several of their postgraduate Masters in Education and PG Cert programmes (2017-2021).

I have compiled a bibliography for the late Professor Donald McIntyre, my MPhil and PhD supervisor.
