GENDER AND EDUCATION IN THE CARIBBEAN

Phase 2 (September 2011 - December 2012)

There are three ongoing aspects of the current project:

  • To disseminate the outcomes of Phase 1 to government primary schools in the other three zones of Antigua and Barbuda, and specifically to work through local partners, teachers and students to implement the Shared Reading / Shared Learning initiative in all schools.

  • In the original Zone 1 schools, to develop current good practice in interactive teaching within the context of literacy, as a focus for student voice initiatives and community of practice meetings

  • To disseminate the original research and intervention strategies to some of the other smaller states in the Eastern Caribbean, through a regional conference in September 2011, and to launch appropriate strategies in primary schools in other interested Eastern Caribbean States.
  • Conference

As the second phase of the project develops, the research team will explore in more depth the issue of boys’ apparent underachievement in the Caribbean, and the extent to which it constitutes a ‘problem’ requiring political and educational action.
