The Faculty of Education teaches the Education Papers, with a focus on the study of the disciplines of education (Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and History of Education). There are also opportunities to take inter-disciplinary papers focusing on key issues in Education such as language and communication or global perspectives on education. Prelim to Part I (the first year)

In the first year you will follow an Introduction to the Foundation Disciplines of Education through the study of themes such as childhood and adolescence, or equality and diversity. In addition, you will study Language, Communication and Literacy.

Part I (the second year)

In the second year you will continue to study the Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and History of Education in the two compulsory papers. You may  choose an optional paper on Modernity, Globalisation and Education.

Part II (the third year)

In your final year you will conduct a Research and Investigation (R&I) on a topic in Education, leading to a 10,000-word dissertation. You will take a maximum of two further education papers, at least one of which must be Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology or History of Education. Other options in the Education Tripos include Children and Literature, Creativity and Thinking and Educational Inclusion and Diversity.

Further Study and Training in Education at Cambridge

You could continue your studies in Education at Cambridge by taking one of our full-time Master’s courses. The MPhil courses currently on offer include: Educational Research; Arts Culture and Education; Critical Approaches to Children's Literature;Educational Leadership and School Improvement; Mathematics Education; Perspectives on Inclusive and Special Education; Politics, Development and Democratic Education; Psychology and Education; Research in Second Language Education;Researching Practice; Science Teacher Researchers and Practitioners; and, The Theory and Application of Counselling. These courses provide a preparation for those students who are interested in moving on to the Faculty of Education’s PhD programme.

Alternatively, you might want to progress onto teacher training by completing a teaching certificate through our PGCE programme, the highest ranked teaching certification programme in the country. We offer PGCE training in Early Years and Primary along with Secondary subject specialities in: Art;Classics; Design and Technology; English and Drama; English; Geography; History; Mathematics; Modern Languages; Music;Science with Biology, Chemistry, or Physics; and Religious Studies.
