Geography

The Geography papers are taught by the Department of Geography. The course builds upon a broad foundation of both physical and human geography, and allows you a greater degree of specialism as the course progresses.
Geography is essential to our understanding of place and space. It is a subject which focuses on people's relationships with the environment in which they live. It is an exciting and challenging subject to study, because it encompasses such a broad range of highly topical issues and ideas.
Preliminary Examination to Part I
The first year (Prelim to Part I) you will study one double paper, either in Human Geography (People, Space and the Geographies of Difference) which introduces students to concepts of globalisation and the contemporary restructuring of economy and society or in Physical Geography (Environmental Processes) which focuses on present-day processes occurring in the atmosphere, the oceans, and at the earth's surface.
Part I
In your second year (Part I), you can study up to three papers. You can continue to specialise in either Human or Physical geography taking papers such as Cities, Development, Culture and Society; Geography and Public Policy; Environmental Hazards, Glacial Processes and Earth Observation; or you can opt to expand your studies by taking the other first year paper allowing you to have covered both Human and Physical Geography throughout your degree.
Part II
If you choose to study Geography in your final year (Part II), you can take up to two papers. The titles of the papers change from year to year, but a wide range is always on offer, including regional, historical, social, economic, environmental, and physical geography papers.
