A Route into Teaching

pgce undergraduate Education teacher training

The Cambridge Education Tripos provides an excellent preparation for those intending to teach. Students who wish to proceed onto a PGCE at the faculty or elsewhere are strongly advsed to gain some voluntary experience in a mainstream state-sector school while they are studying for their degree. The Faculty will support you with advise about how to go about this during your degree.

The 'plus 1' Route

The Faculty offers a 'plus 1' route to Qualified Teacher Status for primary or secondary teaching. A large proportion of our students proceed onto the PGCE courses offered by the faculty.

Early Years and Primary PGCE

The Education Tripos degree prepares students brilliantly for the Early Years and Primary course.

Secondary PGCE

To be able to take the secondary PGCE, 50% of your chosen papers must be taken from your subject options. This means taking three subject papers in your second year (Part I) and two subject papers in your final year (Part II).

Further to this the Secondary Modern Languages PGCE course requires students to have two languages - the one that they have studied with Education plus a second language at A level - one of which must be French. We are putting into place opportunities for those students who only have one language at A level, to gain a second language over the course of their degree.

For more information on the PGCE course see the PGCE course pages
