Classics and Education - PGCE at Cambridge

The Classics course prepares all students to teach Classical Civilisation and Latin (applicants without a language qualification in Latin should contact the lecturer in Classics before submitting their application), and also provides opportunities for students to learn how to teach Greek and Ancient History.

The school and university-based elements of the course are closely integrated to ensure that the students' experience is geared to their individual needs and interests.

The emphasis in the subject studies sessions is on the development of practical skills, including computer skills and familiarisation with a wide range of teaching resources.

During the course consideration is also given to topics such as public examinations in classical subjects, the place of Classics in the National Curriculum and the educational role of sites and museums.

When inspected by OFSTED, in 2002, the course was awarded grade 1 awards, and described as "very good with many outstanding features." As such, it is regarded as one of the most outstanding courses in the country.
