Leading Learning for School Improvement

Staff

The group includes a core academic staff of 18 members. It is chaired by Professor John Gray, a leading authority on school effectiveness and school improvement. Other internationally prominent researchers include Professor John MacBeath, whose work on school self-evaluation continues to resonate in policy circles around the world and Professor Maurice Galton, a leading researcher on the effects of transitions and transfers on pupil progress. Peter Gronn from Australia, a noted authority on aspects of distributed leadership, was also recently appointed as Professor of Educational Leadership. The international experience of the group has also expanded considerably in recent years with the appointments of Darleen Opfer from the USA and Ciaran Sugrue from Ireland whilst Mary James has also rejoined the Faculty.

Cambridge has a strong tradition of research and development in the areas of school effectiveness and improvement. It was the home until 2007 of the late Professor Donald McIntyre, an authority on teacher and school development, as well as the late Professor Jean Rudduck, who is widely acknowledged as a founding parent of the global interest in 'pupil voice'. In an earlier decade it also provides a base for such noted figures in the school improvement world as Michael Fielding, David Hargreaves, David Hopkins, Geoff Southworth and Mel West.

The staff members of the group are listed below. Where appropriate, each name is linked to the person's academic profile which contains contact details and further information. Members of the group currently available to supervise research students are indicated with an *.
