Abstract

The hierarchical model of achievement motivation: Conceptual and applied issues

In this talk, Professor Elliot will overview his conceptual model of achievement motivation and present data from studies designed to put it to empirical test. He will also provide a general overview of the link between achievement goals and important achievement outcomes. Furthermore, he will address some applied considerations that emerge from research in this area, using his hierarchical model as a guide.

Profile

Andrew Elliot is Professor of Psychology at the University of Rochester, where he has been since receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994. His major area of interest is the study of approach and avoidance motivation. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications, and has edited two handbooks: The Handbook of Competence and Motivation (with Carol Dweck in 2005) and The Handbook of Approach and Avoidance Motivation (in 2008). He has received four early- and mid-career awards for his research, and has given talks on his work in 15 different countries. He has been an associate editor of the Journal of Personality, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and Social and Personality Psychology Compass.
