Summary

In this case study, a group of Year 13 'A' Level English Language students used DTP and web-authoring packages to support recasting of materials into a CD-ROM entry on Vampires for Year 7 pupils. Materials were pre-selected from the Internet and downloaded to the school's intranet to ensure students did not access unsuitable materials. Student logs, teacher observations and verbal feedback during and after lessons provided varied data from which evidence for success was drawn. Findings showed that hands-on experience of ICT helped students to develop a genuine understanding of the practical and stylistic conventions of computer-generated texts - and pointed to advantages of formats such as sound, moving image and hyperlinks over traditional print-based text in relation to the specified purpose and audience.
