What is TEACH-IN?

The main objective of the TEACH-IN project is to increase our understanding of teacher leadership and how it can be developed in secondary schools and communities in ways that support school improvement and social transformation. The analysis of teacher leadership, and strategies that involve families and the wider community are at the core of this initiative. This project started in April 2014 and will be finished in April 2016 (24 months).

The TEACH-IN story

The project is based on the involvement of the Leadership for Learning academic group at the University of Cambridge and CREA at the University of Barcelona. Particularly, it takes advantage of the non-positional teacher leadership approach (Frost, 2014) developed in the HertsCam network and the International Teacher Leadership initiative and the INCLUD-ED project, the only research in social sciences selected by the European Commission among the 10 most successful researches in Europe.

Research questions

The TEACH-IN project will answer the following questions:

1. How teacher leadership is conceptualized and practiced in secondary education with regards to school improvement? Which are the countries with most effective educational leadership in this regard and how such leadership is performed?

2. Does schools as learning communities and those that implement successful actions in diverse socioeconomic contexts strength effective teacher leadership? In which ways does teacher leadership in these schools promote knowledge and culture building?

3. What is the role of communities in creating synergies between teacher leadership, school improvement and successful actions? Do communities influence sustainable teacher leadership? Are there any common patterns in this regard across EU countries?
